Polare App (iOS and Android)

Profiles  ( ) are how Polare organise information about your house, rooms, heating and cooling devices, electricity tariff and more. Think of a Profile as a preset for your heating or cooling device. A Controller (e.g. the Polare Mini) will not work with our savings service unless it has an active Profile. You must assign a Profile to a Controller for it to work.

What is a Profile?

A Profile is a combination of:

  a Property              a Room              a Device

We call any one of these an element of the Profile. Together, these provide the basic information we need about your space, location and usage to calculate optimal savings periods and produce automated schedules for your device. Information we need about each of these elements are in the dropdowns.
Property
The house or property you are using the Polare controller in. We need to know:
  1. Where it is. So we can get accurate weather reports, and find the electricity market prices where you are. This includes how high it is (the weather at sea level is different to at 1,000m).
  2. What it is. Is it a home, an office or something else? This helps us understand use patterns.
  3. Electricity supply. Such as information about your electricity tariff or supplier.

Room
Heating and AC works in a specific room, so we need to model that room.
  1. Size. Using the dimensions you give us, we can calculate the thermal mass of the space.
  2. Heating influences. Such as how many windows the room has, and how often they see sunlight.
  3. Cooling influences. Such as how many external walls it has (internal walls loose heat to the house, while outside walls loose heat completely), and what floor it is on.

Device
Information about the heater or air conditioner you are using Polare with.
  1. Type of device. Obviously we need to know if it is a heater or an air conditioner.
  2. Wattage. This affects how quickly it can heat up the room. When using Polare, quicker is almost always better, so we can make best use of the cheapest times. A more powerful (higher wattage) device will heat or cool the room quicker.

Once you have defined a Profile and assigned it to a Controller, you can also set the Settings for that Profile - these are exactly how you want the device to work, and are just like you would use on a thermostat or timer.

Why do Polare use Profiles?

Profiles give us a much more accurate thermodynamic model than other heaters or air conditioners on the market, even whole house systems.

The space a heating appliance is used in has a huge impact on both the result, and the amount of energy that heater requires. You have known since you were young that you shouldn't leave a window open when a heater is on. Unfortunately, your heating system doesn't know that. You have probably thought about insulation, double-glazing or other proofing to reduce your heating bills. But your heating system doesn't know these, either.

Even a top-range, professionally installed model, is fitted only to a rough estimate of the volumetric space of your house (how much air it has to heat or cool). We've learned that the volumetric space of your house is totally insufficient to calculate how to efficiently heat your house. There are a hundred other factors that make a big difference to your heating and costs, almost none of which are incorporated by modern heating systems. Our AI has been built to consider these factors, and to work out your specific requirements. This is why we ask you for more information than any other products.

It is also how you can tell that our AI works. Any AI needs input information to work. Any smart or AI system that doesn't ask for this information, simply cannot operate effectively. It's like asking someone to drive blindfolded.

Idea
For example:
The Thermostat model. The system overheats the room to the point where the temperature sensor at the thermostat registers the correct temperature. It then waits until the temperature falls a certain amount below that, and turns it on again. Repeat.
What you experience.  The room is always either hotter or cooler than you want it, because the thermostat produces spikes and troughs. Some parts of the space will also be hotter and cooler than you want.

The Timer model. A timer setting puts heat into the room during a set period. This tends to leave the room cold for the first few hours of heating, depending on the thermal mass of the building (how much energy a space requires to change temperature).
What you experience.  The room is cold for the first few hours of heating (usually the first half of the day) and too warm during the second half. The room is warm for hours after you are no longer in it. The room is too hot on warm days, and too cold on cold days, because it doesn't account for the outside temperature.

What we do

Polare build a more advanced model of your rooms and house out of the box. We take the information you provide us in Setup, and build a custom thermodynamic model to work out exactly how much heat needs to go in to that space to hit the temperature you want. Our AI then continuously tests that model - it sees if what it expects to happen actually happens - and learns how to improve it from the results. From this, we work out what the thermal mass of your space is, and adjust our schedules accordingly. You get a new schedule every day, adjusted for your space on that precise day (accounting for the external temperature). This means we work out characteristics of your insulation, windows, building material, property age and construction, all without you needing to know those details yourself - because how many of those do any of us know? We mostly aren't builders, architects or engineers, and few of us built our own houses.

This information lets us calculate exactly how much electricity is required and when, to hit your temperature target, and to adapt that to the external temperature and weather conditions each day. We then send a schedule to your Controller for that day, so all you should experience is the temperature you want, when you want it, for the lowest possible price.

My Profiles

Go to the My Profiles page by tapping the    icon on the bottom menu.

Assigning a Profile

You must assign a Profile to a Controller to activate the AI automation and savings service. You can do this in two ways:
  1. Go to My Controllers ( ) > tap on the Controller you want > tap on Assign Profile in the Controller screen > select a Profile from the list
  2. Go to My Profiles ( ) > tap on the Profile you want to assign > tap the Assign button ( ) > select a Controller from the list
Once a Profile is assigned to a Controller, it will turn green and be flagged as Active ( ). This means our servers will start calculating schedules for your device.

Alert
A Profile can be assigned to more than one Controller at once - for example, if you have multiple heaters of the same model and want to use them in a very large room. However, this is not the intended use of a Polare Mini. Although our AI does check for this and takes account of this situation, we cannot guarantee the accuracy of the savings in this case.

Remove a Profile

You can remove a Profile from a Controller in the same way assigning one above:
  1. Go to My Controllers ( ) > tap on the Controller you want > tap on remove Profile in the Controller screen > confirm you want to remove the Profile
  2. Go to My Profiles ( ) > tap on the Profile you want to assign > tap the Profile Active button ( ) > confirm you want to remove the Profile
Once you have removed a Profile, you will need to assign another Profile to that Controller to continue using the service

Create or Edit Profile

The first time you register a Polare Controller, you will be given the option to set up a Profile. This will allow you to register the Controller, create a Profile of your house and devices, and choose Settings for the Controller, all at one time.

If you don't want to do this all during intital setup, or if you want to make another Profile, you can also create Profiles separately.
  1. Go to My Profiles ( ) > tap on Add New Profile
This will take you to the Create or edit Profile screen:

This screen allows you to make a Profile from existing elements you have added to the app, or to add new ones.

Create a Profile

  1. If you want to make a Profile from elements you have already added, then tap on and select the element you want to use
  2. If you want to add a new element, tap on or whichever element you want to add, and you will be taken to the setup process for that element. You will then be able to add it as above.
A name for the Profile will be automatically generated, or you can rename it to whatever you want.
You can also set the Settings you want to use with this Profile.

Edit a Profile

If you want to change an existing Profile (if you want to change one or more of the elements) you can also do this from the My Profiles screen.
  1. Tap on the Profile you want to edit > tap on the Setup ( ) button

This will take you to the Create a Profile screen, but with the elements from the existing Profile pre-filled. Just change the element(s) you want.
  1. To quickly create a new Profile this way, select Save a New Profile (this will create a new Profile using your settings).
  2. To update an existing Profile, select Save Existing Profile.
